Reminiscence about Ladies Cricket

Beware! The Vipers are back in town!
Our girls are back, the inaugural Kia Super League Champions returned to the Ageas Bowl this morning for the 2017 Press Day with the new season less than a fortnight away and we are buzzing to see the team back and raring to go.
Captain Charlotte Edwards is once again joined by Kiwi superstar Suzie Bates, alongside England’s Tash Farrant and Danni Wyatt. Hampshire’s Barbados connection now finds itself in the women’s game as 19 year old all rounder, Hayley Matthews, arrives on the south coast as the Vipers look to gain back to back victories in the competition having finished top of the league last season and then beaten the Western Storm on Finals Day in Chelmsford.
There is one more addition to be made to the squad following the unfortunate withdrawal of South Africa’s T20 skipper, Dane van Niekerk who excelled during the recent World Cup. An announcement will be made on Dane’s replacement in the near future. We shall keep you posted.
There is an added bonus this year with Finals Day planned for Friday September 1st 2017 at Hove, but there is a lot of T20 cricket to be played before then!
The girls campaign is as follows;
Thursday 10th August          Western Storm                    Home          Ageas Bowl
Tuesday 15th August           Loughborough Lightning     Away           The 3AAA Ground
Sunday 20th August            Surrey Stars                         Home          Ageas Bowl
Wednesday 23rd August     Lancashire Thunder             Away           Liverpool CC
Saturday 26th August          Yorkshire Diamonds            Home           Arundel
Friday 1st September          Kia Super League Finals     Day              Hove

For all other fixture dates, please refer to https://www.ecb.co.uk/super-league
The Full Squad for this season, once again headed up by General Manager Bobby Parks and Head Coach Nick Denning is;
Charlotte Edwards (captain), Tash Farrant, Danni Wyatt, Arran Brindle, Suzie Bates, Hayley Matthews, Georgia Adams, Katie George, Linsey Smith, Ellen Burt, Tara Norris, Izzy Collis, Carla Rudd, Charlie Dean
Tickets are available for home matches through the Ageas Bowl website https://www.ageasbowl.com/cricket/tickets/southern-vipers/ and the club shop at the ground will also be selling Vipers merchandise http://www.ageasbowlshop.co.uk/en/vipers-clothing-merchandise
Following last weekend’s success with the England Women winning the World Cup at Lords, especially in such dramatic style, and the huge coverage and interest given over to women’s sport, let’s hope that this season sees matches in front of big crowds up and down the country, with the wonderful Ageas Bowl fans setting the tone next week as the tournament gets underway.
